Pleasant Grove's annual Strawberry Days celebration will have two grand marshals this year, chosen for their helpfulness and support to the community. Anne Fisher and Jeniel Fugal will serve in the honored positions at this year's festivities.

"These are people who serve the community," said Strawberry Days committee chairperson Betty Memmott. The marshals will attend all of the events during the week, ride in the parade and make a grand entry each night of the rodeo, she said.

Fisher has served her community through the Lions Club service organization, which primarily focuses on sight and sight preservation.

"She has been a faithful member of the Lions Club for many years," said Memmott.

"I am surprised and shocked. I'm honored, but I didn't expect it," said Fisher about the honor. The Lions Club has been a family affair for Fisher. "My dad was a member for a long time, then my husband joined and then me. So we've had a long association," she said.

The Lions Club primarily focuses on sight and sight preservation. "We have furnished eyeglasses to people who cannot afford them," said Fisher. The organization also collects used eyeglasses to clean and send to other countries. Additionally, the club provides financial help to students through scholarships.

Fisher is happy to be serving as grand marshal alongside Fugal, who is her aunt. "I am very close to her," she said.

"Jeniel built beautiful floats for Strawberry Days for many years," said Memmott. In the past, individual LDS wards would build floats for the parade. Fugal participated every year by helping to design the floats, drawing up the plans and helping to decorate the floats.

"We did that for a lot of years," said Fugal. "That was when Pleasant Grove was much smaller."

Fugal fondly remembers many Strawberry Days celebrations, as well as picking a lot of strawberries. "Even now, I like to go down and help stem the strawberries for Strawberry Days," she said.

While Fugal said she would rather be working on a float than riding in the parade, she is happy for the honor. "It will be nice. I feel honored that they selected me."

Berried Treasure is the theme for this year's celebration. The week of events kicks off with a concert in the park on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. There are activities every day through June 23, when the week wraps up with another concert in the park.

Huck Finn Day, one of the most attended events each year, will be held on June 21 at Battle Creek Park, 850 E. 200 South, from 9 a.m. to noon. "Hundreds of people go," said Memmott. In addition to the many booths, games and fishing, there will be a train at the park this year.

The PRCA Rodeo will run from June 19-22. The Mammoth Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on June 22. For more information and a full schedule of events, go to www.plgrove.org/events/strawberry-days.

June 6, 2013 P. G. Lions Club Dinner Meeting

Once again we as a lions club have the privilege of  sponsoring educational scholarships.  This evening we gave scholarships to Spencer Baker ( going to U of U) and Cassidy Wood (BYU).  See picture below.

From time to time we present a humanitarian award to an outstanding community service to the local community.  This year we presented this award to Officer John Lloyd of the Lindon police department.  He has spearheaded many youth programs including the DEAR program.  His 27 years as a policeman has made a great deal of difference for children in the Pleasant Grove and Lindon communities.  See his picture below.
A service award was given to Jan Macfarlane for 45 years of service to the lions club.  He also received his overdue 40 year  chevron pin.  Jim Fisher receive his 25 year recognition and Dennis Thayne his 20 year chevron pin.  It is great to have such service and support from such lions as Jay, Jim and Dennis.
For the next 3 weekends the lions club will have an entry in one of the community parades.  June 8th will be the Cedar Hills parade, June 15 will be the Orem Summer Fest parade and June 22 will be the Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days parade.
Lions club is a great way to give back to your community and make a difference in many lives.
