Annual Christmas Basket Project, December 17, 2011

Once again we have the opportunity to provide Christmas Baskets of food for those of neighbors that are having current challenges in their lives. The Lions Club along with the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club put together 71 boxes of food which included such items as a turkey, 5 lbs. of potatoes, vegetables and a pie.

Food was picked up from stores at 7 am and packed into boxes starting at 9 am. Food boxes were then delivered to those whom we felt could really benefit from such a gift. We are so grateful for all who took time out of there lives to assist in this most worthwhile project.

The more Lions Club members we have the greater difference we can make. Being a part of your local Lions Club is a wonderful way to give back to your community. The Pleasant Grove Lions Club currently represents northern Utah County. Give us a call and consider becoming a Lion. We are the largest service organization in the world. November 11, 2011 - Neph Lions host Veteran's Day Celebration

Lion President Lynn Seely, his wife Darline and retired Colonel Angela Longboat were invited to attend the Nephi Lions Club Veteran's Day celebration.

Retired Colonel Angela Longboat, member of the Pleasant Grove Lions Club spoke at the annual Nephi Veterans commemoration.

She spoke to three groups: 9:30, 12:30, 5 p.m. After each session attendees witnessed American flags being retired.

Colonel Longboat talked about honoring those all those who served in the military in any capacity. Every service man or woman made it possible for us to be in our country and say "The Pledge of Allegiance". Remember all of the wars and conflicts, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, The Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. There are some forgotten wars such as Granada and Kosovo. She noted our struggles can be considered blessings if we look at them with a positive attitude. Colonel Longboat lost her vision when blown up in Iraq. Her blindness allows her to see every individual as beautiful and handsome. She also mentioned how her service dog "Faith" has helped her. She shared with the children how Faith acted when working with her harness and how she acted like a normal dog without her harness.

We in the Pleasant Grove Club so much appreciate the example of retired Colonel Angela Longboat and the service she has rendered to our great country.

Oct. 22, 2011 - Girl & Boy State Scholarship winners

At our dinner tonight catered by Costa Vida we heard reports from our Girl and Boy State scholarship winners and our American Legion guests. The Lions Club supports leadership programs that youth can participate in and develop in to our future leaders. We are glad to support leadership programs as we can because we see the difference it makes in the participant's lives. All scholarships came from Pleasant Grove High School.

Every September the Pleasant Grove Lions Club provides breakfast at the Pleasant Grove Heritage Days festival. This is an opportunity to let the community know who we are and to raise funds for the sight preservation and scholarship programs that we participate in. This is a fun time for all and plenty of good food to eat. Scones are an added plus.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 the P. G. Lions Club held its annual educational scholarship presentation dinner. Every year we try and provide scholarships in the Northern Utah County area with education scholarships. This year we gave two scholarships. Our two winners this year were Elizabeth Ann Pace (no pictures and not present at dinner) fromLone Peak High School who will be attending BYU and Nathan Morris from Pleasant Grove High School and will be attending UVU.

During the month of June the Lions Club participate in parades in Pleasant Grove and Cedar Hills to help these two cities be aware of the Lions Club and the scholarships and programs we are involved in. We are here to serve and assist those who need a lift. Part of our mission is to the preservation of sight. We are always looking for fine men and women that want to volunteer and be part of an organization that helps people preserve their sight.

We also work with scouts that need to have an eagle project. This becomes a win, win for everybody. Glasses are gathered from the community, cleaned, read and bagged and sent to third world counties for distribution though humanitarian efforts in third world countries.

Harrison is the latest of our scouts that have worked with the Lions Club to fulfill his eagle project requirements. He did a great job gathering and processing 250 glasses.

ANNUAL HOBY DINNER MEETING 05/21/2011

Once yearly we as the Pleasant Grove Lions Club honor our HOBY scholarship youth leaders. This year we assisted Ernesto Terreros and McKinsey Veenker. They reported about their expreiences and what they learned most from the HOBY experience. They shared their plans for the future as well. We are grateful for the support of their parents. That means a great deal.

Bob Ross HOBY Leadership chairman and Dave Olpin President of Utah HOBY expressed their appreciation for the Lions Club support. They shared with us insightful information about the HOBY program. HOBY stands for the Hugh O'Brian Youth program. This program teaches leadership skills to our youth.

For those of you whose may not know Hugh O'Brian was the movie actor Wyatt Earp. He was also a great example and a man with 8 docterate degrees.

As a Lions Club we strive to do much in the preservation of sight. One way we do that is providing glasses to needy people in third world countries. As boy scouts look for eagle projects to do, the Pleasant Grove Lions Club has stepped up and provided a means where scouts can do an eagle project by gathering, cleaning, packaging and having glasses read so the Lions Club can see that these glasses go to really making a difference for good to those in the most need.

This is the story of 13 year old Harrison Ressler and the first Eagle Scout applicant in his troop. Harrison went around his neighborhood and collected 235 pair of glasses. He had put a box in his local library as another means to collect glasses. One family gave him 20 pair of difference sizes glasses that they had used over the years as there kids were growing up. This was a 40 hour project for Harrison. Below are pictures of him with the boxes of glasses and with his very supportive parents Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ressler.

We were privileged of have the Monkey Town Cloggers perform for us. They are from the Monkey Town area of Pleasant Grove. We thank Anne Fisher
for getting this group for us.

It was our opportunity once again this year to present an individual from the area with the Humanitarian of the Year Award. Dr. David Dickerson has traveled all over the world (such as Taiwan and Peru) giving dental services to third world counties and to individuals that would never have this kind of help any other way. He takes a team with him. There are a couple of planned trips coming up this year. He shared with us video and slides of the many people he and his team served. We are so proud of the difference he has made in so many lives.
The Pleasant Grove Lions is always finding ways to improve the lives of individuals in the community. We are now looking at providing scholarships for students in the local area for Boy and Girls State, HOBY leadership program and college educational persuits.

This meeting was our annual meeting where we have the priviledge of having our 28T District Governor comes and shares valuable information about the district and other important information for lion clubs. Bob Hansen is a great District Governor and is supported by his lovely wife Yvonne.

Less Southam shared with us about their next misssion to Africa. Less & Nancy have been there before and had many great opportunities to serve. Kim perform three lovely songs for us with our own Anne Fisher as accompanist.
We are please to have Dr. Angela Longboat join the Pleasant Grove Lions Club and become our newest member. Welcome Dr. Longboat. Milt Taylor was her sponsor. She has retired from the Armed Forces, has worked for the CIA and Army Intellegence. Dr. Longboat has 3 Doctorate degrees. Welcome Dr. Longboat.

Christmas Food Baskets Project, December 18th, 2010

Every December we as a Lions Club and friend get together and prepare Christmas Food Baskets for families who are in need. The feelings of love, gratitude and making a difference filled our hearts. We felt that instead of having our own Christmas dinner and program that we would direct our efforts to helping others be a little more cheery. Folks that receive the baskets are most grateful and the spirit of Christmas is felt by all.

We started at 11 am at the club house. There were many hands and a good amount of a good variety of food items. Macey's grocery store donated 35 hams for the project. 35 Christmas food baskets were packed to overflowing with food. The food was donated my members of the lions clue and a family who wanted to buy food rather than buying gifts. What a learning experience for the children of that family.

Six long tables were set up so the food baskets could be filled in an assembly line fashion. At the end of the assembly line baskets were tagged with delivery and contact information. At the end of the assembly line a greeting letter from the Pleasant Grove Lions Club. Baskets were delivered to families in Orem, Pleasant Grove and American Fork.

We as a Lions Club are so grateful for and acknowledge our friends who helped make a big difference in our project. Below are some pictures of some of those involved. Names on the pictures have not been included for annonymity purposes.

Dinner Meeting October 23, 2010

Once again we as a lions club met at our monthly dinner meeting and this month we had two three special guests.

Below is a picture of Angela Longboat. She shared her amazing story about her life and how she ended up becoming blind. Angela had acquired 8 advanced degrees by the time she was 20. She served in the CAI and Intelligent area of the military for a good number of years. Not only did she serve in the Viet Nam war but Desert Storm as well. It was in Desert Storm she was blown up and lost her sight and received brain damage. She shared with us her amazing recovery. She has a nice dog guide. Angela is a great example of faith and perseverance.

Bob Hansen is our 28T District Lions Club Governor. He shared with us some great advice about building Lionism in our area and about the districe convention coming up in November.

Head table: Lynn Seely President, his lovely wife Darlene, Pleasant Grove City Council woman Cindy Boyd and her husband Gary. Cindy brought us all up to date on what was happening in Pleasant Grove. We have so much appreciate her support of our club.

2010 Heritage Day Breakfast

It is time to put on our calendars Saturday, September 11, 2010 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. This is the date of Pleasant Grove Heritage Days. As always the Pleasant Grove Lions club is putting on the breakfast at the city park, 200 South Main Street. This is a great way to start your Heritage Days celebration and help the Lions Club to make a difference in your community. Bring your glasses that are not needed any more and donate them to the Lions Club as we use them to help our brothers and sisters in third world countries.

Cost for the breakfast are as follows: $5 adults, $4 for children and those who will be running in the 5K race. We look forward to see you and your families at the Heritage Days breakfast. Should you have questions please call 801-785-2669.

It was a real pleasure to have our scholarship winners and girl and boy state winners at our meeting to share with us there experiences and plans for the future. Once again we as a lions club had the privilege of hearing from our Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership scholarship winners that we helped Sponsor. Because of the leadership that this program provides to selected youth from our local high school we feel it a privilege to assist in helping to provide scholarships to this great program. Jessie Black and Nathan Church expressed their appreciation for our help and talked about the value of program and the leadership skills they learned.

Bob Ross President of the Utah HOBY program shared with us how the program works. He presented us the 2009 (2010) forthcoming) patch acknowledging our service efforts with HOBY and appreciation for the assistance in the scholarships.. HOBY provided leadership training to over 90 high school students this year.

Starting in July 2010 these new officers will lead the Pleasant Grove Lions Club to new eighths. Lynn Seely - President, Jo Mace -Vice President, Jo Taylor Secretary, Matt Mace - Treasurer, Anne Fisher - Membership Chairman, Darlene Seely - Tail Twister. As we have in the past we look forward to great things from the new officers. We thank Milt Taylor and his officers for their direction in the past two years.Installation ceremonies will be May 1st, 2010 at the board meeting.

Below is a picture of picture of Lynn Seely, presenting Deon Giles with a plaque as a Humanitarian Award Recipient for 2010. Deon Giles is the directore of Leisure Services in Pleasant Grove City. He was chosen because of his abilities to do many tasks and coordinate and direct many departments for the city. He has worked with the city since he was 14 years old doing different tasks. He also now works as a part time fireman with Pleasant Grove City. Deon is very easy to work with and goes the extra mile to make sure everything functioning and operating well. He has been a great help to the Lions Club making improvements on their building as well as coordinating plans for their Heritage Day Breakfast in September.

The Pleasant Grove Lions Club held our annual meeting with our District Governor Willis Gurr and his lovely wife Shirley He shared with a message of inspiration and the importance being involved in lionism.

We were blessed with 4 new members this month.

The folks that get the baskets are so appreciative and we joy in making Christmas a little more pleasant for those who are in need. Thanksgiving Social - November 21, 2009

We had our annual Thanksgiving Social at the club house on 600 E Center in Pleasant Grove, Utah. 71 years this club has been around. We are so glad to have a facility to help us carry on the work of Lions. Bob Lloyd catered the dinner and Mike Cottom presented a wonderful, wonderful program. He had magic show, a segment on building leadership and finally he entertained us by playing. Vibraphone. He has such a superb presentation. Everyone ought to have at least one change to see his presentation. He encouraged us to do even better as lions.

Bob Lloyd catered our dutch oven dinner. He has helped us on other occasions as well such as Heritage Days, etc. We presented him a gift of items he can use in his meal preparations.

Mike did a number of things with a dollar bill including pulling it out of an orange that had appeared to have been burned up. We finally knew it was the same bill as the serial number was the same.

Here Mike is reading us a story called "The Dog Poop Initiative". The story is really about taking responsibility for change and the initiative to make things happen for the betterment of all.

Finally Mike entertained us on the Vibraphone. He explained how it was different than the Xylophone.

This was such an enjoyable time for all. So not only do Lions to a great deal of service but we also take time out to socialize and learn at the same time.

Sept 12th, 2009 Heritage Days Breakfast

Once again we as the Pleasant Grove Lions Club we had the privilege of serving breakfast to all those who wished to have breakfast at the Pleasant Grove Heritage Days celebration. We served over 350 people. We appreciate so much the services of Bob Lloyd and his equipment (grills and such). He made a very significant contribution. We also want to thank members of the Payson Lions Club, Alexa and other from the "Extension" program from District 28T and students from BYU (a group put together by Bryan Rust). Bryan is a Secretary of the Utah County Business Lions Club. It takes many hands to make a project such as this work. As we all help each other the efforts and projects of Lionism will make a difference, not only in providing glasses for the needy but glasses for third world countries and scholarships for worthy students furthering their education and leadership skill sets.

President Milton Taylor and the rest of the Pleasant Grove Lions Club want to thank you, the public in your contributions to our club so we can continue providing valuable service in the Pleasant Grove area.

The Pleasant Grove Lions Club will be serving a delicious hot breakfast again this year at Pleasant Grove Heritage Days. Volunteers are welcome to help us on this project so that we can provide glasses to those who cannot afford them and other worthwhile charitable project. Our club had it's annual summer social at the home of Lynn and Darline Seely. Thank you Lynn and Darline. The weather was very cooperative and pleasant. We had Katherine Willis who the Lions club helped support at Girl's State. She shared with us about her experience at Girl's State and the leadership skills she had the opportunity to learn. After her remarks she played several musical selections on her cello. She is very talented. She plays with the Temple Square Orchestra. That is way cool. Pictures will be forth coming.

July 18, 2009 Pleasant Grove Lions Club Dinner Meeting

The lions club had the privilege of hearing from our Boys State and Girls State scholarship winners plus an educational scholarship winner to Snow College. Jonathan Browne as the Boys State winner (father Chip Browne), Krista Pease Girls State winner (mother Tracy) and Kaitlyn Waters educational scholarship (Diane). See pictures below.

The dinner was catered by Joel and Laurie Ellington. They have done this before and they do a wonderful job. Great cooks. Laurie is Jim and Anne Fisher's daughter.

We do these type of scholarships once a year to try and promote leadership among our nation's youth as one day they will be our future leaders.

Come join us in Lionism and help us made a real difference in our community. The community is only as good as the service that is rendered by concerned people and service organizations that care. It is not what your community can do for you but what you can do for your community. There are many wonderful opportunities not only in our community but the world as a whole. The more members we have the more we can give to our community. So if you have ever come across occasions where you have seen where a lions club has changed a community for the better contact us and see if Lionism can be a vehicle for you to not only add richness to your life but enrich others as well.

Pleasant Grove Straberry Days - June 20th

May 23, 2009 - Humanitarian Project

We had a wonderful time painting cars for children who live in Afghanistan. When the cars are finished they will go with Roseann Gunther's humanitarian effort to Afghanistan later this summer. It was nice to help make a difference in the lives of children who have very little. After our efforts we had a Kentucky Fried Chicken Lunch. April 18 Humanitarian Dinner

The entertainment for our evening was two piano duets by Nathan Brown and his daughter Sarah. Nathan is Anne Fisher's nephew. Sarah studied piano with her father as a beginner, but is now a student with another teacher. She recently was the featured and only pianist in a solo recital, with the exception of two duet numbers with her father. They live in Riverton.

The Pleasant Grove Lions Club was presented with 360 pairs of used eyeglasses collected by a young Lindon girl, Courtney Ricks, as a service project. Courtney and her parents, Glen and Valarie Ricks, brought several large boxes filled with the glasses. Courtney had prepared a poster showing her project as a candidate for Little Miss Lindon this year. Each candidate chooses a service project as part of the pageant. Courtney chose collecting eyeglasses because she herself needs eyeglasses, and she wanted to help others who need eyeglasses and cannot afford them. These 360 pairs will go to a Third World country where there is great need. Courtney knew that Lions Clubs devote great efforts to sight conservation all over the world.

Pleasant Grove Lions Club presented the Humanitarian of the Year Award for 2009 to Dr. Kenneth E. Hooton, optometrist, at their regular April meeting. He has been given this award in recognition of his generous and ongoing help to the efforts of the Pleasant Grove Lions Club in eyesight conservation and service to the communities. Dr. Hooton and members of his family have traveled several times in past years to Mexico where he did eye exams and distributed eyeglasses. Dr. Hooton's office is in American Fork. Accepting the award for him in his absence were his wife Angie Hooton and their daughter Jannie and their office manager Marie.

Several times a year, the Pleasant Grove Lions Club receives requests for help with acquiring eyeglasses for those in need of them. Often, the schools will determine that a student is having problems with eyesight and can't afford treatment, so they are referred to the Lions Club. Dr. Hooton has generously donated the eye exams, and as the need for eyeglasses is determined, the Lions Club pays for those.

Dr. Hooton and his staff have "read" hundreds of pairs of used eyeglasses donated to the Lions Club for humanitarian projects. The eyeglasses must be "read" to determine what the prescriptions reading is, then they can be matched to a recipient who needs that particular prescription. The eyeglasses go with various humanitarian service groups as they make these trips to Third World countries.

Pleasant Grove Lions Club was able to send a large number of eyeglasses with a humanitarian group who are preparing to go to India in May. The group is "Unite for Sight", a national organization. Jennie and Cody Forsyth, representing the group, presented their information to the Lions Club early in March.Cody is one of the students from UVU who will be volunteering with this project and they will be in India from May 10 through May 20, working mostly in remote villages. The volunteers and interns will be working with optometrists and ophthalmologists who will examine and treat those who need help with eyesight problems, even with needed surgery. The eyeglasses they will take with them are cleaned and packaged by Lions Club members and volunteers. Then after having been read by a qualified optometrist, they are labeled with the proper prescription reading, to be matched to the person receiving the glasses.

Pleasant Grove Lions Club is part of Lions Club International whose mission, in part, is sight conservation and service. Lions clubs "Recycle for Sight" projects help people all over the world. We had a wonderful time at our March Lions Club Pizza dinner at our club house at 600 E Center in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

We had the privilege of having Joel Ellington (son-in-law) of Anne Fisher who has serve in the military in Afghanistan. As you see in these pictures Joel is dressed in the apparel that you would expect to see Afghanistan people wearing. Along with the authentic apparel he brought some items he had with him while in Afghanistan including an Afghan rug. It was so interesting to learn of the people and their culture. We are so thankful for the great service our military personnel are doing. As members of the Pleasant Grove Lions Club we know what service is all about. Service is our motto.

Feburary 21st Dinner Meeting

As always we have a fine time at our dinner meetings. We had the pleasure of having Natalie and James Thompson speak to us.

Natalie received new glasses via of our Lions Club and she shared with us her special experience in getting the glasses and the difference it has and is making in her life. She was very impressed with the optometrist we use. The first picture is Natalie speaking to us about her getting her glasses and the real difference it has made for her. The second picture is Natalie sharing with us the family history she has done on the family line of her native American Husband James.

James is a full blooded Dakota Sue Indian. He shared with us stories of his wonderful heritage and some life changing stories. He had a chart of some of his family history plus artifacts that he shared with us and we were able to see and handle.

This was a great evening. We not only gained valuable insight of the heritage we have in America, we also were reminded of the difference the Pleasant Grove Lions Club makes in regards to our sight saving programs.

We are looking forward to a couple of humanitarian projects in the next couple of months.

Eye Screening Jan 20 - 28, 2009

Pleasant Lions Club conducted photo screening for children ages three to five at the Funshine Early Learning Center which is sponsored by Pleasant Grove City.

A total of 220 students were screened, 22 students were referred for further follow up by their personal optometrists or pediatricians.

Lions members donated 20 ½ hours to the photo screen project. Parent volunteers donated 28 volunteer hours for the project. Parents helped fill out forms and shuffled children between to the classroom and conference room. Some parents helped read to the children waiting to have their eye screening done. Parents and volunteers were very happy to have us come give this service. They couldn't believe such a simple technique could provide so much information to an optometrist. The director, plans on us returning next year to screen the children at the center.

The Lions Club express a special thanks to the local optometrists and their staff for helping with this valuable service to the community.

What is Photo Screening

A young child does not know that he has a vision problem. He can't tell how well he should be able to see. Most young children under the age of 5 are not capable of communicating effectively to solve the problem.

Lions Photo Screening is to identify children whose eyes may have some type of defect, which if left untreated may lead to a life-time of vision problems or blindness.. Photo Screening can detect improperly aligned eyes, cataracts, near sightedness, far sightedness drooping eyelid, astigmatism, and other amblyopic (dull vision) factors. Some far and near sightedness is normal in young children.

Photo screen is not a diagnostic tool, so we advise the parents to have the child seen by an eye doctor to get proper diagnosis and treatment as may be needed. Lions screen only children ages 1 through 5. The child sits on a chair, looks at a camera and two pictures are taken. There is no physical contact with the child. The pictures are taken to a local optometrist to read. If further diagnosis is needed, the parents are contacted.

At our monthly dinner meeting we had the pleasure of having Brennen Darger as Eagle scout share with us his eagle project. He collected over a 150 pair of glasses, had them washed and prescription read. These glasses will be taken to needy recipients in India sometime in May. We as lions are so grateful for Brennen for the difference he has made in providing a service that will give the less fortunate a chance to see better. The first two pictures are with Preisdent Taylor and Brennen. President Taylor in the first picture is presenting Brennen with a Utah Lion pen. His last picture was taken March 8th, 2009 at his court of honor.

Joy Lloyd and Loretta Tymm provided a couple of wonderful musical numbers for us.

There are many opportunities as a lion to make a difference in your community. Service just makes you feel good.

Christmas Service - December 20th, 2009

About 7 of us lions had the opportunity of putting together and delivering 21 food baskets to needing families in the Pleasant Grove and Lindon area. We found this to be a very desirable activity and see the lives that were blessed. We chose to do this rather than our normal Christmas party. We decided it was better to feed needy families rather than feed ourselves. It is great to be a Lion!!!

On November 15th the Pleasant Grove Lions Club had a wonderful social celebrating 70 tears of service. Milt Taylor President conducted. There were many honored guests including past presidents and district governors from both districts 28T (the district we are in) and 28U. Numerous other district board members along with the Chair of the Lions Foundation in Utah. Speakers included Lion Jay MacFarlane (shared history), Dave Monson (his life as a lion), Bob Russell district 28T governor and George Whitley foundation Chairman

The owner of the Purple Turtle catered a wonderful Thanksgiving type meal to the 50 or so people present.

Anne Fisher and Darlene Seely had much to do with getting the history of the club together. There were a couple of tables or memorabilia. Jo Taylor and Lori Jonas worked with decorations and center peices. We thank all those who made this wonderful anniversery possible. These kind of celebrations help us reflect on the wonderful service Lionism has provided since 1917. The Pleasant Grove Lions club has been in Pleasant Grove since 1938.

Milton Taylor was sworn in by past president Lynn Seely as President of the Lions Club created by the unforeseen resignations of our prior president. Sharon Hunt (a co-chairman of the Festival of Trees) shared information with us about the Festival of Trees and how Primary Children’s hospital came to be. She had some wonderful stories of how this hospital has made such a difference in children’s lives. The Festival raises money for the hospital and is a great event to attend. Festival of Trees this year will be December 3-6, 3008 at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, Utah.

Jason Stapleton plaid a couple piano numbers and his brother Nation shared with us the story he told at the local Story Festival that raises money for the local library.

Lions Family Night Sept 20, 2008

We had a wonderful dinner furnished by members of the lions club. These family nights are enjoyable with dinner and a program. Lizzy and Libby and their family members joined with us and Lizzy and Libby shared their experience in India and Africa. Lizzy was in India and worked at the leprosy colony. Libby worked at a deaf school in western Africa. We were grateful to help support these to very special young ladies. Libby's dad and brother furnished a couple of musical numbers. Sept 18, 2008 Eye Screening

The Lions Club did an eye screening at Central Elementary in Pleasant Grove. In the couple of hours that we were there we screened 500 children. Lorrie, Darlene, Jo, Jay and Carrie were present from the lions club and Linda Monson also helped. It was surprising how many children had eye issues so we really were able to make a difference for the children so that they can be on the read of improving their sight.

Heritage Days at Lions Pavilion Sept. 13, 2008

Saturday Morning the Pleasant Grove Lions Club prepared breakfast at their pavilion in the city park. We would like to thank all the Lions that were able to participate. Here is a report from Lizzy whom the Pleasant Grove Lions Club contributed money to assist her in her wonderful service and teaching in a leprosy colony in India. Following are her own words:

Teaching English to the children at Rising Star was so fun and so rewarding. At first I felt intimidated at the thought of teaching the children, knowing that what I taught them would determine somewhat of their success for their whole lives. The first day of school we sat down with our first child, got to know them and feel comfortable with them. We tested them to check their level of English. I was surprised to see that even though one child would be the same age as another; the level they were at were completely different. The children are so sweet and so eager to learn. They are first generation learners and it is a big deal to them that we were teaching them English. We would sit on little mats in a beautiful mango grove and teach them. I enjoyed my time teaching and saw so much progress in my students. At first I thought that I would not make much progress with them considering the time we had to teach, but I was so pleased to see that they were grasping the lessons and truly progressing.

Visiting and working in the colonies was one of my favorite things. My first day in a leprosy colony was again, intimidating. I didn't know how to communicate with the people. I followed my session director around because she has been around leprosy patients for 4 years. By the end of the day, I was going around visiting alone. I fell in love with the people at the Pandora home for the leprosy affected. They are amazing, and there is a strong spirit there. Our project for our 3 weeks was to build a sunshade. We started with chiseling out cement in the ground a foot and a half deep for the poles. We mixed cement with our hands and poured in the holes and set the poles in. We waited a day and then chiseled holes in building walls for different poles. When applying for Rising Star Outreach, they mentioned that we would be donating our time, sweat, blood and tears. Building the sunshade was the sweaty part. It was a lot of work and so very much worth it. The people that lived under the sunshade were so happy and grateful. One man would boil hot sugar milk for us each day we were there working. We found out that they are so kind and generous even though they have nothing material. I want you to know how very much I appreciate this once in a lifetime opportunity to visit and serve in a place I was needed. Your financial support, prayers, and words of encouragement helped sustain me through this journey of learning, service and self-discovery!

At our installation dinner we had dignitaries Randy and Ileane Taylor from district 28U who from hail Kamas, Utah. Randy is the current Tail Twister and past District Governor for district 28U. Randy installed our new officers.

Our new officers are Lorrie Jonas President and Milton Taylor Vice President.

Strawberry Days Parade in Pleasant Grove, Utah, June 21st, 2008

The Pleasant Grove Lions Club had the opportunity to be in the Strawberry Days parade in Pleasant Grove, Utah. We had a brand new truck that had signs all over it telling about our 70 years as a club (1938-2008), outh youth scholarships and about Ann Fisher our humanitarian award winner. We had young high school girls in vests helping us pass out baloons, candy and information about the club. Jo our Secretay Elect was our resident clown (the only one in the parade). Lorrie our President Elect was sharing information about being a family club and passing out baloons. Milt Taylor our Vice Presidnt Elect contributed the pictures. So as you can tell we have loads of fun as a family club as well as provide much needed service in the community.

From our Lion's Club Cook - New England Clam Chowder

Lorrie Jonas our Vice President does the main courses for our lions club dinners. Here is her latest rendition from our Lions Club Family Night meeting April 19th. It is New England Clam Chowder.

New England Clam Chowder

Two 4oz cans of mushrooms or 1 package of fresh mushrooms

One large sweet onionOne 20 oz can of clams or anything above or three 6oz cans

2 in a half sticks of butter

2 pints of heavy whipping cream

5 celery pieces from the stock

2 table spoons of salt

2 table spoons of pepper

2 table spoons or sugar

5 large size Idaho Potatoes or 8 red skin potatoes

Taste test it and add more if you think it needs it. (Its all up to you).
Cut up everything and put it in the crock pot on low and cook for most of the morning until the potatoes are soft and clams are falling apart. It is very important that the clams are not chewy. If you have a large bean pot you can cook it in there on 250 degrees till tender. Most people do not have one. When the main part of the meal is tender start making the broth in a separate pan. Add the whipping cream and whip till thickens a bit, then turn on low heat. Add the rest of the butter, salt, pepper and sugar. Cook on med heat till start to boil. Make sure you stir frequently or the milk will stick to the bottom of the pan. Add flour if chowder is not thicken enough. Remember to add slowly. No one likes chowder that is too thick. Should be enough to serve 8 and them some. Double recipe if you are serving for lots more.

Ladies Night at our Club House in Pleasant Grove, March 15, 2008

We had a young girl from the theatrical company that rents the building we hold our meetings in perform Over the Rainbow rendition. She will be playing Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz at Utah Valley State College.

Libby who has returned from a sign language mission for the LDS church spoke about her efforts to raise money so she can go to Africa and teach sign language to teachers who work with deaf children. Lion President Lynn Seely watches on.

Each third Saturday we have ladies or family night at our club house. President Lynn Seely conducting meeting.

Tonight we Honored Ann Fisher with our humanitarian award. We had our good friend Frank (City Administer) talk about service and how Ann was the epitome of service. We are so happy to welcome new members in our club. Milt and Jo Taylor have moved to Orem and now has transferred their membership to our club from the Salt Lake City Lions club. Milt has been a member of the Lions International since 1979. They will be a big asset to us.

February 17th Meeting; Family Night

We had the pleasure of having Dr. Norman Gardner, a blind professor of Finance at UVSC in Orem, Utah as our speaker. He spoke to us about blindness and how he handled his classes being totally blind. He was a great example of what blind people can do when given the proper training and opportunities. He shared with us that the real problem of blindness is not eing blind but the stereotypes and attitudes of the blind person as well as the stereotypes and attitudes of the public at large. It was Dr. Gardner's hope that we as Lions treat blind people as we would want to be treated and to realize that blind people can function in society as well as the average person given the proper training and opportunities.
